Résumé G.J.M. (Gert-Jan) van Kesteren, DVM MMO

G.J.M. van Kesteren (1955) studied at Tilburg University (Economics 1974), at the University of Utrecht (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine 1981), at the Open University (KHO Business Administration 1990) and at TIAS Business School/Tilburg University (Master of Management and Organization 2003). Currently he is studying Law.

In the early eighties he held several posts in meat inspection. During this period he was also a part-time teacher at SVO, the Dutch college for the food industry.

From 1987 till 1990 he was employed by the Dutch Product Boards for Livestock, Meat and Eggs (PVE) as Management Consultant / Innovation Consultant / Change Agent. He has advised the management boards of meat companies on different issues such as: strategic management; marketing management; management of innovation, quality management; production management and human resource management. Focussing strongly on results, he has also trained executives in implementing business policies. In order to stimulate effective Research & Development, he has acted as an intermediary between universities / scientific institutes and the meat industry.

From 1990 till 1995 he worked for SturkoMeat, the largest private meat company in the Netherlands, as Executive IKB (Integrated Production Chain Control) and later as Managing Director of the company’s largest plant. In this period he also contributed to the establishment of national GMP-codes for pig meat processing plants.

In 1995 he founded the Condor Consultancy. His fields of expertise are:

  1. strategic planning; management of innovation; logistics; marketing; mergers; organizational changes; business process re-engineering; finance and insolvency; human resource management; public-private partnerships; knowledge and technology transfer
  2. Corporate Social Responsibility; quality management e.g. integrated quality control in agricultural and fishery production chains, GMP, HACCP, ISO, BRC and veterinary public health e.g. meat inspection, veterinary (EU) legislation
  3. Food Law, Animal Welfare Law, Administrative Law and Contract Law.

His consulting experience includes the food industry and its stakeholders, the veterinary pharmaceutical industry, governments, non-governmental bodies and the educational sector throughout Europe, in Brazil, USA and Japan. Since 1999 he has been a visiting lecturer on “Management” at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Utrecht. Since 2002 he has been active as an expert for the European Commission (food quality, food safety and sustainability).
