G. (Gijs) van Selm MSc

Gijs van Selm (1963) studied at the Agricultural University in Wageningen (1988) with zootechnics as his main subject and business administration and agricultural business economics as subsidiaries. After completing his studies, he joined SturkoMeat, at that time the largest private pork producer in the Netherlands.

In 1991, he became responsible for the Utrecht branch as branch manager, from where the retail segment in central and western Netherlands was served.

In 1998, he assumed responsibility for the Lichtenvoorde branch, to which the Apeldoorn branch was added (on an interim basis) at the end of 1999. The activities include the process from slaughtering to portioning.

In addition to operational site management, he has gained experience in project management, for example setting up and implementing quality and logistics systems and feasibility studies for (biomass) energy projects.

Environment is one of his specialties. In addition to various licensing procedures, he has been involved in environmental care, waste water purification, waste flows and cost reductions. His responsibilities also included projects aimed at improving efficiency, technical returns, working conditions and quality. These projects encompassed the entire process from meat producer to consumer.

He has been working as a consultant at Condor Consultancy since 2000. His experience with strategic projects includes:

  • Advising a large traditional central butcher's shop on the relocation or termination of its business.
  • Feasibility studies for on-site processing of animal by-products.
  • Participation in sector committees on veterinary regulations.
  • Interim management at large production companies (meat products, beef, veal and pork).
  • Management in the waste water sector.
  • Production of energy and fertiliser from biomass and manure processing.
  • Implementation of various quality systems such as HACCP, IFS, BRC. Obtaining (export) approvals (EC, USA, Russia, etc.).
  • Advising meat production companies on (environmental) permits, NVWA, investments, etc.
  • Market research of the Chinese pork sector.
  • Greenfield startup of a large pork slaughterhouse with meat processing to consumer packaging in China.
