A farmer in the North Brabant town of Heukelom found a slaughtered calf in his pasture on 13 October. Police say it is likely the animal was killed by strangers for meat.
Pieces of meat and footprints were found near a county road. No one has yet been arrested.
Initially, the farmer suspected that a wolf had attacked the animal. But a wolf expert later determined that the calf must have been killed by humans. This was evident from the animal's slit throat and removed intestines.
This is not the first time a farmer has found one of his animals mutilated. Several sheep were slaughtered in Deventer and Wilp, for example, including at a petting zoo.
In early October 2024, a Romanian couple received a six-month prison sentence after police found 18 pieces of sheep meat in their freezer in 2022. In total, the couple allegedly killed more than 20 sheep in pastures in Gelderland and Overijssel.
