The RIVM recently advised against eating eggs from hobby hens throughout the Netherlands. The reason? Too high concentrations of PFAS - chemicals that hardly break down and accumulate in the environment. Based on a nationwide sample, the verdict reads: "Prefer not to eat hobby eggs anymore". But as logical and understandable as this sounds, it is mostly symptomatic of a deeper systemic crisis in our handling of pollutants.
PFAS is everywhere, but who is responsible?
The trigger for the RIVM investigation is a 2023 NRC publication, which found PFAS in eggs from hobby chickens around the Chemours plant in Dordrecht. Chemours (formerly DuPont) used substances such as PFOA and later GenX for years. But these industrial activities have made PFAS ubiquitous in our living environment.
PFAS can also be found in:
- Industrial effluents and air emissions
- Firefighting foam on defence sites
- Plastic food packaging and pizza boxes
- Drinking water, rainwater, soil and air
It's in nature, in groundwater, in the food chain - and thus also in the eggs of our chickens. What once started as a local environmental problem is now a structural social issue.
What does the RIVM report show?
In 60 hobby chicken eggs from all over the Netherlands, RIVM found PFAS in almost all cases.
Some figures:
- In 52 out of 60 cases, people already exceed the health threshold (HBGV of 4.4 ng/kg/week) when eating 7 eggs a week.
- In 31 cases, even 1 egg a week is too much.
- The highest value: 101 ng PFAS per gram of egg, or over 5,000 ng per egg (at 50 grams per egg).
- One such egg thus contains 15 times the maximum tolerable weekly intake for a 73 kg adult.
Interestingly, the RIVM also states that Dutch people without hobby chickens are already above the safe limit through food and drinking water only. Yet it is precisely the hobby chicken farmer who is now being targeted as a risk source.
What's in packaging and industrial food?
Besides eggs, there are numerous other PFAS sources that expose us daily without us noticing:
- Popcorn bags (microwave): 30-300 ng/g (EFSA, 2020)
- Fast food packaging: up to 100 ng/g of food
- Paper coffee cups: 5-70 ng/g
- Fish: 20-100 ng/g, mainly from rivers and coastal waters
- Supermarket eggs: lower on average, but up to 5 ng/g in some cases
So exposure through food packaging is cumulative. Yet there is hardly any public outcry about this - let alone a consumption warning from the RIVM.
Coming EU ban on PFAS as well as BPA: a tipping point?
Change is on the way. The European Union is working on a sweeping ban on PFAS, banning tens of thousands of substances in one fell swoop. Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and Sweden have jointly put forward a proposal that appears to have support. If the ban goes ahead, it will mean the largest ever chemical ban in the EU. Entry into force is expected between 2026 and 2030, depending on the type of use.
In addition, the European Commission decided in January 2024 to also ban bisphenol A (BPA) in food packaging such as drinking bottles, cans and packaging coatings. BPA - like PFAS - is endocrine disrupting and has been linked to infertility, cancer and immune disorders. This ban will take effect from 2026.
Both bans are important steps, but they also confirm how long government and industry have ignored the risks of these substances. Meanwhile, though, citizens are urged to leave their hobby eggs?
Skewed risk communication
The risks from PFAS are real. But a ban on hobby eggs, without a simultaneous visible industrial source policy or clear public education about other PFAS sources, is one-sided. It is a form of environmental policy at the consumer's back door, while the front door of pollution remains wide open.
Who is really being held accountable? The hobby farmer?
So the PFAS problem is not about a loose egg. It is about a polluted system, in which chemicals have been used without restraint for years - and in which the consequences are put on the citizen, while those responsible are still too often left out of the picture.
The upcoming EU ban on PFAS and BPA marks the beginning of a tilt. But then our national policies must also tilt with it: from symptom control to structural responsibility.
