Emotions in pigs and how to recognise them

What is a good life for a pig? "A life that a pig itself considers worth living," says Professor Bas Rodenburg. He is a professor of animal welfare at Utrecht University. So apt, and totally Van Staartjes, looking from the animal's perspective. How nice and also quite an honour to be able to talk to Prof Rodenburg about welfare, emotions and communication in pigs. Animal welfare further expanded on EU agenda

In its programme for the presidency, the Czech Republic indicates that it wants to respond to current developments in the field of animal welfare in connection with the forthcoming comprehensive review of the existing EU animal welfare regulations, which will also address topical issues.

At the same time, the Presidency will support the Commission's efforts to ban the keeping of hens in battery cages in the EU by 2030. A debate on the current state of animal welfare is scheduled for the November Council. The Netherlands also supports the Commission in its efforts for an ambitious review of EU animal welfare regulations. The Dutch commitment in this regard is the Chamber

sent, including in the Animal Welfare Collective Letter of 14 April last (Parliamentary Paper 28286, no. 1255). The final EU legislative proposal on animal welfare is expected to be presented by the Commission by the end of 2023.

The Chamber will be informed about the Commission's proposal through the BNC fiche in due course, after which negotiations with the Commission will start. The process on forming and deciding on the new EU animal welfare regulation will therefore take some time.

What to expect from the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) on animal welfare in terms of scientific advice is contained in a 'roadmap': https://food.ec.europa.eu/system/files/2021-10/aw_eval_revision_roadmap_efsa.pdf
